Octopus Craft

Octopus Craft

A bright octopus craft that introduces a child to a playful inhabitant of the deep sea. A simple and fun way to create an underwater creature with your own hands.

You will need:

  • Colored paper (orange, purple, pink — any shade you like)
  • Blue or light blue paper for the background
  • Markers (black or colored)
  • Googly eyes (store-bought or cut out of paper)
  • Scissors
  • Glue

Step-by-step Octopus Craft

Our little octopus consists of a semicircular body and eight flexible strip-like tentacles. These are what give the craft its lively look and character.

Trace the outlines of the parts on colored paper and carefully cut them out.

You will need eight strips of paper that are the same length and width. Keep in mind that six tentacles should fit along the lower part of the body.

To add volume, curl the tentacles nicely. This is easy to do by wrapping each strip around a pen, finger, or pencil. The thinner the object, the finer and more delicate the curl will be.

Now for the final touches!

  • Glue the curled strips to the back side of the semicircular body. Don’t aim for perfect symmetry: let some tentacles hang down while others playfully spread to the sides. You can place them higher or lower, to the left or right — arrange them however your imagination suggests.
  • Add a face: glue on the eyes and draw a cheerful smile with a marker.
  • Draw suction cups on the tentacles and body. It’s best to use a marker close in color to the octopus, but a simple black outline works well too.

Glue the finished sea creature onto a blue or light blue base sheet. Draw air bubbles, wavy lines, green seaweed, or colorful fish to make the craft more vibrant and lively.
