This bright and colorful sailboat glides across the sparkling sea. The craft is made from simple paper shapes: triangle sails, a semicircle hull, curled paper strips that become rolling waves, and a cheerful sun.
Materials
- Two strips of blue paper in different shades (light blue and blue);
- Colored paper in three different colors;
- Yellow paper;
- Scissors;
- Glue.
How to Make a Sailboat on the Waves
Start by preparing two long, narrow strips of paper: one blue and one light blue, as shown in the photo.

Place the light blue strip on top of the blue one. Glue the strips together only along the top edge, leaving the bottom edges free. This will become the base for your craft.

Fold the bottom section of both strips upward so that the folded edge reaches about halfway up the paper.

Cut the folded section into many narrow strips to create a thick paper fringe.

Now curl the blue paper strips. Gently roll each strip with your fingers to create soft curls. If it’s easier, wrap each strip around a toothpick, skewer, or another thin object.

Repeat the same process with the light blue strips underneath.

Next, make the sailboat and the sun.
Cut two triangles of different sizes and colors for the sails—one tall and narrow, the other shorter.
Then cut a semicircle for the boat’s hull.
Feel free to choose any colors you like. There’s no need to make the boat realistic! In our example, the sails are green and pink, while the hull is orange.
Finally, make the sun. Ours is a round sun with pointed rays, but you can simply cut out a yellow circle and draw the rays directly onto the background with a marker.

Now it’s time to assemble the picture.
Glue the sailboat and the sun onto the uncut upper section of the background. Place the boat in the center or slightly to one side to leave room for the sun.
The sun doesn’t have to fit completely on the page. Letting part of it peek off the edge adds a fun, playful touch.
We also invite you to make a simple origami boat.

Your Sailboat on the Waves craft is complete! The curled paper-strip waves give the sea movement and texture, making it look lively and full of energy.
