A colorful, long, and bendable accordion paper snake. It is made from many strips of paper in two different colors, making it a fun and engaging craft for kids.
You will need:
- Two sheets of colored paper in different colors;
- A small piece of red paper;
- Googly eyes (store-bought or paper);
- Scissors;
- Glue.
How to Make an Accordion Paper Snake
First, cut out the main parts of the craft—long paper strips. They should be in two different colors, for example, lime green and pink, as shown here. Prepare 6–8 strips of each color.
Also cut out an elongated snake head and a forked tongue. Prepare the eyes as well—either make them from paper or use ready-made googly eyes.
Next, assemble the snake’s head. Glue on the eyes and tongue, and if you like, draw the nostrils.
Now it’s time to make the body. Take one lime green strip and lay it on the table. Place a pink strip across the top end of the lime strip and glue them together so the craft is sturdier. The strips should form a right angle.
Begin folding the accordion. Fold the lime green strip to the left so that it covers the top edge of the pink strip.
Then fold the pink strip upward in the same way.
Continue folding the strips alternately until only short ends remain. Press each fold firmly. There’s no need to use glue while folding—the accordion should be able to stretch and compress freely.
Next, glue new strips onto the exposed ends to continue and lengthen the body.
Keep folding the accordion, adding new strips whenever needed. Continue until you’ve used all the strips. You should end up with a long, two-colored accordion.
Then fold the protruding end of one strip downward and trim off the excess. This will become the snake’s neck.
If the strip of the other color also has an extra end sticking out, trim it as well so the snake looks neat and even.
Finally, glue the snake’s head to the trimmed end of the body. Thanks to the small neck, the head will tilt slightly upward instead of resting flat on the table.
