A caterpillar made of an egg box is one of the easy and interesting kids crafts of waste material. An egg box – both of expanded polystyrene and paper – is an inexhaustible source of creative evocations. Cells may be used to create numerous characters; you may take a single cell or even the whole box that is used, for example, for making a crocodile or a boat.
To turn an egg box into a caterpillar you will need:
- A half of a paper egg box;
- Pipe cleaners;
- Moving eyes that can be easily replaced by paper ones;
- A small piece of red paper for a smile that can also be made with a felt pen;
- Gouache, a brush and no-spill cup with water;
- Scissors, a glue stick, compasses or any other sharp object to pierce the box.
Caterpillar Made of Egg Box
Cut a single row of 5 cells from an egg box. You can use scissors or knife. It is not an easy procedure, and children won’t be able to manage it. In general, it’s better to ask father or grandfather to do it.
Cover the cells with gouache. Here, you can use any combinations: different colours for every cell; all cells are green; all cells are yellow; all of them are green but the first one is yellow, and many other solutions. A multi-coloured caterpillar will look fantastic and bright. Not diluted gouache keeps staining fingers for a long time; thus, it will take time for it to dry thoroughly.
Prepare two pieces of pipe cleaners and fold their ends. Use compasses or other sharp object to make holes in the first cell and insert fluffy antennas in there.
Eyes and a smile will become the finishing touch of the caterpillar made of an egg box. Optionally, you can glue legs to the sides or decorate the caterpillar with pompoms and patterns. Also see how to make a caterpillar of toilet paper tubes.
