Dinosaur Craft for Kids

Dinosaur Craft

This easy dinosaur craft is suitable for children of different ages. It uses simple shapes, and the dinosaur’s body is made using an accordion-fold technique.

Materials Needed

  • Colored paper for the dinosaur;
  • Colored cardstock for the background;
  • A black marker, felt-tip pen, or pencil for the smile and nose;
  • A googly eye or a paper eye;
  • Scissors;
  • Glue.

Step-by-Step Dinosaur Craft

Before you begin, prepare all the pieces that make up the dinosaur. Draw a tail, a leg, and a head attached to a curved neck on colored paper. Below them, draw a rectangle that will become the dinosaur’s body.

Your dinosaur can be any color you like. Feel free to choose your favorite shade. In our example, the dinosaur is yellow.

When choosing colors, make sure the dinosaur is a different color from the background sheet. Otherwise, the dinosaur may blend into the background and its shape will be difficult to see.

If you would like to make the eye from paper, draw a small circle on a sheet of white paper.

Cut out all the pieces along the outlines. You will need two legs. Fold the paper in half before cutting to make two identical pieces quickly.

Fold the rectangular body piece into an accordion. This is easy to do. First, fold over one edge and crease it firmly. Then turn the piece over and repeat the process.

Many children enjoy prehistoric themes and dinosaurs, so you might also like these creative projects: a dinosaur organizer made from cardboard tubes and a fun dinosaur modeling clay craft.

Compress the accordion folds by pressing each section against the next. Then fold the accordion in half and glue the middle together to create a semicircle. Open the accordion again so that it spreads out widely.

Now move on to the head. Draw a nose and a smile on the dinosaur, then attach the eye.

Glue the finished pieces onto the background sheet. First, place the neck and head, tail, and legs. Then position the body on top of them. You may want to arrange the pieces in different ways before gluing to decide on the best layout.

The color of the background can help create the setting for your dinosaur. A green background can represent a prehistoric jungle, while a blue background can suggest a clear sky, a meadow, or open grasslands. In the second case, you can add clouds or birds flying in the distance to make the scene even more interesting.
